Bakhita House

The Bakhita House project aims to transform the lives of vulnerable girls and women in The Gambia under the patronage of St. Josephine Bakhita

The Bakhita House runs two programmes in Banjul:

A drop-in day centre for vulnerable women and girls: this programme provides counselling, accompaniment and psychosocial support to at-risk women and girls and provides information and awareness on hygiene and sanitary practices; and human rights

Vocational training and entrepreneurship: this programme sponsors courses in fashion (tailoring and sewing) and beauty and cosmetology (hairstyling and design) – two popular means of self-employment in West Africa; beneficiaries are provided the means to start up their small businesses and earn a living with dignity for themselves and their families.

The Bakhita House For Vulnerable Women and Girls

Launched in July 2021, the project comprises two pilot programs:

Bakhita House for vulnerable women and girls – a non-residential facility providing a safe space for young women and girls to meet regularly and to receive counselling, accompaniment and psychosocial support, mentorship and information and awareness on hygiene and sanitary practices; and human rights.

Vocational Training and Entrepreneurship: this program sponsors young women and girls in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses in fashion (tailoring and sewing) and beauty and cosmetics (hairstyling and design) – two popular means of self-employment in West Africa and Southern Africa. Beneficiaries will be provided micro-credit to start up their small businesses and earn a living with dignity for themselves and their families.

Twelve (12) lovely young Gambian girls have already been enrolled in the Bakhita Project and have started their TVET courses. They meet regularly at Bakhita House. We are in the process of recruiting and enrolling Six (6) Zambian girls in the Bakhita Project.
