The Bakhita Initiative for African Women

The Bakhita Initiative for African Women

Welcome to the Bakhita Initiative for African Women – an interfaith project under the patronage of St. Josephine Bakhita, the enslaved African girl who became a saint and universal symbol of the Church’s commitment against slavery.

The Bakhita Initiative is motivated by our shared love, faith, and hope as seekers, disciples, and pilgrims in the journey of life inspired by the Spirit of the Risen Christ.

The Vision of Bakhita Initiative

To transform the lives of vulnerable girls and young women in deprived communities across Africa through holistic training programs, entrepreneurial skills, mentoring, and dignifying employment

To empower and reclaim the dignity and beauty of African Women Religious and their communities through creative and contextualized theological reflection, formation, and renewal.

Our Patron Saint - Saint Josephine Bakhita

A modern African saint whose life was a statement against the brutal history of slavery. Her legacy is that transformation is possible through suffering.

Pope John Paul II said in St. Josephine Bakhita:

“We find a shining advocate of genuine emancipation. The history of her life inspires not passive acceptance but the firm resolve to work effectively to free girls and women from oppression and violence, and to return them to their dignity in the full exercise of their rights.”
